how do I calculate how many apples and oranges were bought with an amount of money

Word problem where I need to build an equation.  A person spent $7.75 buying apples and oranges.  Apples cost: $0.40 each and oranges $0.35 each. How many apples and oranges were bought?

Mark M.

Since you have two unknowns, the number of apples and the number of oranges, you need two equations.
One might be the number of apples plus the number of oranges equals some number.

Marie,
Michael J. has presented a good explanation.
To build the equation to get units of dollars (to equal $7.75), he first multiplied  (dollars/apple)*(number of apples), then added (dollars/orange)*(number of oranges).  Notice how the units cancel out in both terms to leave only dollars, which can be added.  This gets much easier with practice, so sometimes it's not even mentioned.
Also, Mark M. stated a rule that you should remember (that you need two equations to solve for two unknowns).
