A word Problem

You are a shopkeeper, a man comes in and steals $50 without your attention. The man then comes back and buys $40 worth of merchandise, and gets $10 in change. How much did you lose?

And ...  as a business, you still earn the profit from the $40 sale (only a few dollars) as you would have by selling the merchandise to anyone.  So, it's a little better that anyone (even the thief) buys the merchandise than if nobody buys it or, worse, buys the same merchandise somewhere else.

So, today I bought (truly, not stole) some DQ gift coupons to give to people.  The people may or may not use them (thus, the store keeps my money), but they cannot be used at other stores.  The DQ knows that this if great for successful business.  Actually, all sorts of "give away" coupons (not money stolen) improves business because the stores get more (but sometimes in smaller transactions) profit.

So, if the man came back and bought $1000 worth of merchandise, I might actually gain something!

Ah, but this just a math problem, and my imagination (important if you want to be a shopkeeper) is running wild.
