How do you find Y in this equation? I am officially stumped!!!

A line has a slope of 5. It passes through points (1,4) and (6,y). What is the value of y?

Cyana,

The answer depends on the current topic of algebra.  If you are studying slope-intercept for vs, standard form and converting from one to another, the computations that Philip P. gave will solve the problem.  (Note to solve for y, add 4 to each side for the equation).

But if you are plotting functions on a graph, a slope of 5 mean that the line rises 5 units on the y axis for each increase of 1 unit on the x axis.    So, starting at the point (1,4) x has to increase 5 units to get to (6,y) and the position on the y axis will increase 5 units for each additional x unit (5 of them from 1 to 6), so y=4 has to increase 5*5 units up to 29.  The second point must be (6,29).

I really helps to draw the graph is you use this method.

25 = y - 4
25 + 4 = y
29 = y
