A rectangular Park is 4 miles long and 2 miles wide. How long is a pedestrian path that runs diagonally across the park?

If you draw this problem out, you'll see that the diagonal line across the park makes a right triangle with sides of 4 and 2. We know that the hypotenuse is the square root of a²+b²

 

so we get

 

c²⁼a²+b²

c²=16+4

c=√20
