Let x = 2/3 * y (one number is two thirds of the other

 

x + y = 45       ( the sum of the two numbers is 45

 

 

replace x with 2/3 * y

 

2/3 *y + y = 45

 

5/3 * y = 45

 

5y = 135

 

y = 27

 

x = 2/3 * y = 18

 

 

18 + 27 = 45
