Tiffany, the denominator (the bottom number) is how many equal parts we break our total into.  The numerator means how many of those parts we are dealing with.

 

If we have 30 students and divide them into 10 equal groups, how many are in each group? 3, right? 3 x 10 = 30.

 

If we have 1/10, then we have 1 of those groups of 3, or 3.  If we have 3/10, then we have 3 of those groups of 3, or 9.
