The plans for a shed call for a rectangular floor with a perimeter of 296 ft. The length is three times the width. Find the length and width.

"perimeter of 296 ft" = two times the length + two times the width = 2length + 2width

"length is three times the width", length = 3width

 

296 = 2length + 2width

296 = 2(3width) + 2width

296 = 6width + 2width

296 = 8width

∴ width = 37 ft and length = 3(37) = 111 ft 

2(37) + 2(111) = 296 ft
