The chairs in a hall are to be arranged in rows. If I put 6 chairs in a row, there will be 4 chairs left. If I put 7 chairs in a row, there will be 3 chairs short. How many chairs are there in the hall?

Let N = number of chairs, r = number of rows

 

N = 6r + 4

N = 7r - 3

 

6r + 4 = 7r - 3

4 = r  - 3

7 = r

 

There are 46 chairs.
