No, they’re not the same. I have ADHD, and I’ve spent time around a lot of autistic people. It makes sense why people confuse the two. There’s a lot of overlap, and from the outside, they can look similar. But on the inside, they usually feel very different.
ADHD often feels like you’re being yanked in five directions at once. Your brain jumps between ideas, and even when you want to focus, something pulls your attention away. You might feel like you’re letting yourself down, forgetting things constantly, or struggling to get started even when something matters to you. It’s frustrating, and it wears you out.
Autism can feel more like the world itself is too loud, too fast, or too confusing. Bright lights, background noise, or social pressure can be overwhelming. Some people describe it like everything around them comes in too strong, and it takes a lot of energy to stay grounded or respond in a way people expect.
Some people have both, and that can make things harder to sort through. But they’re different in how they show up, what they affect, and what kind of support actually helps. Understanding the difference can make it easier to know what you need and how to ask for it.
