Western Modern Music theory came mostly from the analysis of Bach inventions and fugues. Bach was really channeling his inspiration from a different place and after much analysis, and discovery of his nearly mathematically perfect compositions, sets of rules were invented. And rules are meant to be first understood before they can be intentionally broken. It's just a theory.....But if you want to read music , convey ideas to other musicians,compose music, improvise over complex chord changes, or dig yourself out of a rut, Music theory is extremely useful!!
