A flying trapeze artist must swing along a parabolic path that is equidistant from the floor and the pivot point where the trapeze rope is attached. The rope is attached to the ceiling 8 feet out and 16 feet above her starting point. Use the focus of (8,16) and directrix at y= -8 to determine the equation of the parabola.

Yeah, but the physics (mechanics) doesn't make sense to me - although I am certainly not a physicist! A trapeze suspended from a fixed point will act like a pendulum, which for small angles will follow a circular arc and gets chaotic for larger angles. Not a parabolic arc!! Can any of you physicists out there comment?
