How can I be more confident in a job interview?

I really need to build up my confidence interviewing for jobs. I have notes and practice my responses, but then during the interview I just forget and feel like a deer in the headlights. So how do I come up with better responses? And then how do I remember them during an interview?

Hi there! This is such a common issue people have preparing for interviews. A few hints I give to my clients:

1. Make sure that your mock questions and answers align with your resume, the job description and the company's mission/vision, values and culture. There are generic questions on the internet but...

1. Put the job description in ChatGPT and ask it to provide you interview questions. You can also give it the link to the company's "about" page to draw more ideas (this requires a plug-in).

1. Have keywords ready for each of your answers. Instead of trying to remember your pre-formed answers, remember the key words and use your knowledge and confidence to go from there.

1. Have three stories ready using the STAR method. If you prepare three stories in general about your experience relative to outcomes in a previous job or project, then you will have them to draw from and can adapt them for any question. Stories sell!

1. Record a mock interview with someone with video and audio. Go through the interview twice - once looking at your notes, once without notes. Transcribe the audio and review the video. You will learn a lot!

1. Check the company's webpage for their advice on how to approach the interview.

1. Most importantly be confident, dress professionally, talk slowly but not too slow, make eye contact and SMILE! Smiling is contagious!
