Let the smaller number be represented by "x" and let the larger number be represented by "y".
Then x + y = 14
Twice the smaller number is "2x" and that value "plus two" is "2x + 2". So:
y = 2x + 2
Since "y" is the same as "2x + 2", we can plug in "2x + 2" into the first equation in place of "y":
x + (2x + 2) = 14
3x + 2 = 14
3x = 12
x = 4
Plugging x = 4 into the first equation gives us:
4 + y = 14
y = 10
So the smaller number is 4 and the larger number is 10.
