What are the main ways in which the solubility of organic compounds in water, can be increased?

Probably the most common way is by converting the compound into a soluble salt. For example, one with an available N could be converted to the hydrochloride salt by addition of HCl. An acidic compound might be made soluble by conversion to the Na or K salt, etc.
