D U E is the union, or the joining of the sets D and E.
The set D is all the numbers greater than or equal to 1, or in interval notation [1, ∞).
The set E is all the numbers less than 8, or in interval notation (-∞, 8).
Can you picture these sets on a number line? The sets overlap and cover the entire line. Therefore D U E in interval notation is (-∞, ∞).
