Two trains leave towns 900 kilometers apart at the same time and travel toward each other. One train travels 14km/h faster than the other. If they meet in 3 hours, what is the rate of each train?

900 km covered in 3 hours

900/3 = average 300 km/hr

300/2 = 150 km/h average for the 2 trains

14 difference, add and subtract 14/2 = 7

from 150, to get 157 km/hr and 143 km/hr

or let x+14 = faster train's speed

and x = slower train's speed

multiply by 3 to get their distance in 3 hours

(x+14)3 +3x

=3x +42 +3x

=6x +42 = 900

6x = 900-42 = 858

x = 858/6 = 143 km/hr

x+14 = 157 km/hr

in 3 hours the slower goes 3 times 143= 429

faster goes in 3 hours 3 x 157= 471

471+429=900
