Question

The lenght of a rectangular is four times the width. If the lenght is decreased by 12m and the width increased by 12m, the rectangular becomes a square. Find the demensions of the original rectangle.

For the rectangle;

 

Let w = width

Therefore, 4w = length

 

In the second shape;

 

Let 4w - 12 = length

And, w + 12 = width

 

Since all sides of a square are congruent,

 

4w - 12 = w + 12  Subtract w and add 12 to both sides

 

3w = 24

 

w = 8

 

Original dimensions are:

 

4(8) x (8)

 

32 meters x 8 meters
