- The first step is to write down everyone's favorite line formula: y = mx + b, where m = slope and b = y-intercept.
- Plug in what you know: the slope! Your equation now says y = (1/4)x + b.
- Now, here's the key! Any point on the line can be plugged in for x and y so that you can solve for b. Since you know the point (12, -4) is on the line, plug in 12 for x and -4 for y. Your equation now says -4 = (1/4)(12) + b.
- Simplify and solve for b. I'll challenge you to do this part on your own!
- Now that you know both m and b, you can write down y = mx + b again and plug them in. You're done!
