Suppose you have a generic function y = g(x). If you want to go 3 units down you subtract 3 outside of the x.
Basically g(x) + c is a vertical translation c units up if c is positive and c units down if c is negative.
Therefor you would have g(x) -3
Then if you want to do a vertical compression (shrink) that impacts the y-value so you want to multiply g(x) by 1/3 therefore your final solution would be (1/3)*g(x) -3
