Let X = time it takes both people working together to complete the task
We write the equation on the basis of 1 hour.
So 1/5 is the fraction of the task completed by the person who takes 5 hours when working alone.
And 1/6 is the fraction of the task completed by the person who takes 6 hours when working alone.
And 1/X is the fraction of the task completed by the 2 people working together.
1/5 + 1/6 = 1/X
Now multiply everything by 30X which is the common denominator.
That gives us 6X + 5X = 30
11X = 30
X = 30/11 or a little less than 3 hours
