AVERAGES, and weighted averages, occur very often.
1) Suppose a student earns a 100 on Test I, misses Test II, makes 80 on Test III, 70 on Test
IV, and 85 on the Final. What is student's course average rounded to the nearest tenth?
Use the average formula -- (sum of scores)/(number of scores)
(100 + 0 + 80 + 70 + 85) / 5 (assume 0 on Test II)
(335) / 5
67.0
2) Suppose a student earns a 100 on Test I, 90 Test II, and 65 on Test III. What is student's course average at that point in the course rounded to the nearest tenth?
Use the average formula for the number of scores received SO FAR:
(100 + 90 + 65) / 3
255 / 3
85.0
Note: "average rounded to the nearest tenth" requires the answer to have a "tenth-place" value; in this case, "0"
