Solution:
Let J equal Jack's weight in pounds.
Let S equal Sally's weight in pounds.
From the word problem:
J = 2S + 25
J + S = 225
Using substitution:
(2S + 25) + S = 225
Combine like terms:
3S = 225 - 25 = 200
Divide by 3 to get S = 66 2/3 lbs.
Substitute S = 66 2/3 lbs. into J + S = 225 to get J = 158 1/3 lbs.

Note: After submitting my solution I saw that another tutor had already solved the problem using 2 variables. I chose to do it using just 1 variable because of the simplicity of the problem. Either method will give you the correct answer so long as you carefully define your variables.08/27/22
