Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
L=1+2W
Perimeter = 2L +2W = 2+4W+2W = 6W+2 =42
6W =42-2=40
W =40/6 = 6 2/3 inches Wide
L=1+2(6 2/3) =14 1/3
L+W = 14 2/3 +6 2/3 = 21
2L+2W = 42 inches = Perimeter

Experienced Instructor in Prealgebra, Algebra I and II, SAT/ACT Math.
L = 2W + 1
P = 2W + 2L
42 = 2W + 2(2W + 1)
42 = 2W + 4W + 2
Combine like terms on opposite sides of the equation and solve for W.
To check answer, substitute value for W in equation for L to get L, See if perimeter is 42.
