As mentioned in previous posts, adding the like terms is what the question is asking. This is really the simplest form we could get the equation into until we know what x is, at which point we could express it as one number.

f(x) + g(x) = [-7x - 5x⁴ + 5] + [7x⁴ + 5 + 9x]

= (-5 + 7)x⁴ + (-7 + 9)x + (5 + 5)

= 2x⁴ + 2x + 10

You could also continue with:

= 2(x⁴ + x + 5)
