Example: A consumer buys a case of plastic spoons t a grocery store. The price is 20% of $25.00 plus tax. The first function, the price of $25.00, would be used to determine the price on the item itself after the discount is applied. The second function is used to determine the price after the purchase after the 7% sales tax is added. f(x) is the function used to determine the cost of the item after the 20% discount. The g(x) is a function used to determine the total cost after tax of the purchase.
