A 14ft ladder is leaning against a house, forming a right triangle if the distance from the ground to the base of the ladder is 5ft, what is the distance from the ground to the top of the ladder along the house (vertical distance) Round to the nearest tenth of a foot?

Question 2

You are on a 5ft platform and launch a t-shirt from a cannon straight up with an initial velocity of 18 ft/sec. To the nearest tenth of a second when does the t-shirt hit the ground?

h = sqr(14^2 - 5^2) = sqr(196-25) = sqr171

h = about 13.08

h = about 13.1 feet from ground to top of the ladder

h(t) = -16t^2 + 18t + 5 = 0

t = 18/32 + or - (1/32)sqr(18^2 +4(16)(5))

t = (18+25.38)/32

t = 43.38/32

t = almost 1.36 seconds to reach the ground
