The required reserve ratio is required reserves over demand deposits. In this case, required reserves is X, so you have to multiply the required reserve ratio times the demand deposits to get the dollar value of the required reserves. Then, you would do just as you explained in your question -- subtract required reserves from total reserves to get excess reserves.

How can I figure out how much excess reserves this bank holds with the given balance sheet?
I understand that the you have to subtract the required reserves from the reserves held to get the excess reserves, but what would be the reserves held in this problem? Any help is appreciated.
