I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with some of the things listed above. We use small tools for small hands to facilitate a more mature grasp pattern. We want the child to be using their fingers and wrists to move the pencil, rather than their whole hand and forearm. And I wouldn't recommend a pencil grip for this age at all, their muscles are still developing and they can learn the proper grasp with practice for sure. Pencil grips are for older students who enjoy using them and find them helpful.
Additional things you ca ndo are practicing coloring first then move onto tracing then copying then writing from memory as that is the way these skills develop. Please feel free to reach out with more questions.
