In decimal there are ten numbers per column and in binary there only two but the same principal is applied.
1 = 1
2 = 10 That is a 1 in the 2 column and a 0 in the one column
3 = 11 That is a 1 in the 2 column and a one in the 0 column
To get to 14 we'll need to go up to the eight column or 2 to the third power just as you might need to use the thousandth column or 10 to the third power in the decimal system.
14 = 1110 That is 8+4+2+0 =14
