Amol and Nikhil are both going to Spartan Stadium for the football game. Amol lives 9 miles away and is riding his bike from home towards the stadium at a pace of 1/3 miles/minute. Nikhil lives 3 miles away along the same route but is walking from home towards the stadium at a rate of 1/17 miles/minute. Assume that they both started their journey at the same time.

A is 9 miles away, going 1/3 mile per minute

N is 3 miles away walking 1/17 mile per minute

they are 6 miles apart

T/3 = 6 + T/17

multiply by 3(17)

17T = 6(3)(17) + 3T

14T = 306 = 306/14 = 153/7 minutes

T= about 21.86 minutes or 21 minutes and 51.4 seconds

1/3(153/7) = 153/21 = about 7.29 miles

they're both 9-7.29 = 1.71 miles from the stadium when they meet
