Equation is given to you in standard form (Ax + By = C)


You must rewrite into slope intercept form (y = mx + b)


-2x + 6y = -5

+2x +2x


6y = 2x - 5

6y = 2x - 5

6 6 6


y = 2/6 x - 5/6 which simplifies to y = 1/3 x - 5/6. Your equation is now in slope intercept form, y = mx + b, so your slope, m = 1/2 and y-intercept, b = 5/6

After you have converted STANDARD FORM (Ax+By=C) to slope-intercept form (y=mx+b) hundreds of times, you might realize that the SLOPE = (-A/B) and the y-intercept is (C/B). Most students, will continue to perform the long computation, but great test takers will use fast techniques.

By the way ... if the slope-intercept equation is y=mx+b or y = 1/3 x - 5/6, then why isn't the y-intercept (the value of y when x=0) equal to (-5/6) ?????????????????
