This is a systems of equations problem. Each statement can be translated to an equation as Mark shows. Look at the key words, e.g. difference means subtraction, sum means addition, twice means two times. We can pick any letters for the two numbers--x and y are most common as Mark shows. Once we have our two equations we can use the substitution or elimination methods to solve for one number at a time. For instance, we can substitute for x in the second equation by rearranging the first as (x = y + 9). We can then substitute that into the second equation for x as (y + 9) + 2y =48. Solve for y: 3y + 9 = 48 => 3y = 39 => y = 13. Then substitute y into either equation (top would be simplest). x-13 = 9 => x = 22. Therefore our answer would be (22,13).
