One number is  more than  times another. The sum of the numbers is . Find the two numbers.

3+5y = 18

5y = 18=3 = 15

y = 15/5 = 3

x= 18-3 = 15

the numbers are 3 and 15

15 is 3 more than 4 times 3

15 =3+4(3) = 3+12 = 15

4 times the number is 4x

3 more than that is 4x+3

So the two numbers are x, 4x+3 and x + (4x+3) = 18

5x + 3 = 18

5x = 15
