It's been amended 27 times. Amendments include a Bill or rights, protecting free speech, right to peacefully assemble, freedom of religion, banning the establishment of religion, due process, equal protection, voting rights, rights to counsel, bans on excessive fines or bail, right to confront accusers, right to refuse to incriminate yourself, ban on slavery, among other rights. It is a federal system with checks and balances to prevent excessive power over citizens.
Also, while amendments are difficult to pass, the Constitution has sometimes been called a "living" document, with the Supreme Court interpreting it to fit more modern times.
