eight more than the quotient of a number and 5 is 6
8 + n/5 = 6
n/5 =6-8=-2
n= 5(-2) = -10
the number is -10
"more than" suggests an inequality, but it's also used for "and" or "plus" as in addition
the "is" before 6 makes the expression into an equation, not an inequality.
