An equation of the form Ax2 + Bx + C = 0, where A is nonzero has imaginary solutions only when
B2 - 4AC < 0.
So, 2x2 + bx + 1 = 0 has imaginary solutions only when b2 - 8 < 0. b2 < 8 So, for example, b = 2 works.
