Suppose the class has four students. The first sentence of the argument says that there is one (or more, but at least one) student that gets an "A". That could be Sally, or Bobby, or Ricky...
John is only one of the students that might be getting an "A." We can't assume that John is getting an "A" just because one of the students gets an "A."
