Using "x" represents chickens and "y" represents cows
x + y = 18 Total number of chickens and cows
2x + 4y = 58 Total number of legs of the animals combined
Solve using elimination
-2x - 2y = -36 (multiply the entire equation by -2 so the "x's" eliminate)
2x + 4y = 58
2y = 22
y = 11 (11 cows)
x + (11) = 18 (substitute number of cows into initial equation and find number of chickens)
x = 7 (7 chickens)
7 chickens and 11 cows
