asked 02/19/21What is the speed of the jetstream?
Flying against the jetstream, a plane travels 4665 miles in 5 hours. The same plane flying with the jetstream travels 3 times the distance it traveled going against the jetstream. If the plane travels 462 miles per hour, what is the speed of the jetstream?

Flying against jetstream: 4665 miles in 5h
Flying with the jetstream: 3 times 4665 which is 3·4665=13 995 miles (assuming that is also in 5h, it wasn't clarified in the problem)
Plane speed= 462 miles per 1h
Jetstream speed= ?
a) flying against the jetstream
If the plane is flying against jetstream and travels 4665 miles in 5h, that means that we have to evaluate its speed per 1 hour. To do that, divide 4665 by 5. That is 4665:5= 933.
So, against the jestream the total speed of a plane is 933 mph (miles per 1h)
In this case, if plane speed is 462 mph, then:
total speed= plane speed - jetstream
933= 462 - jetstream
jetstream= 462-933
jetstream= - 471 mph (minus because it's in the opposite direction of the plane)
b) Flying with the jetstream
If the plane is flying with the jetstream and travels 13 995 miles in 5h (again, assuming the time stays 5h), that means that the speed per 1 hour is 13 995 divided by 5, which is 13 995:5= 2799 mph which is the total speed of the plane.
In this case, if plane speed is 462 mph, then:
total speed= plane speed + jetstream
2799 = 462 + jestream
jetstream= 2799 - 462
jetsream= 2337 mph
