This is good question Abhish.
All social media users usually accept the terms and conditions of social networks before signing up. These terms entail user data among other aspects of usage. What is not explicit is how the data shall be used.
We can broadly categorise consumer data into two classes; public and private user data.
Public data consist of piece of information read and mine without having to login into a private space. On the other hand, to get the social media private data one needs to pass some security check such as login authentication to access a company's facebook page audience insights.
I admit unethical means have been used multiple times to identify consumer problems. What I would suggest is reinforcing ethics at different levels. For instance;
- compel companies to declare when they access user data for such purposes.
- social media platforms sensitise their users on best data protection practices.
- establish effective data laws across practices and industries.
I am open to be guided plus open to other views.
