After a round of golf, Keegan's score was 8 strokes more than four times Annmarie's score. If their combines score was -7, what was each player's score?

You can set up 2 equations for this and use subsititution to find the scores. Call Annamarie Y and Keegan X. According to the problem:

 

X=4Y+8 AND

X+Y=-7

 

Solve for 1, and plug into the other:

 

X=-7-Y -> -7-Y=4Y+8 from the first equation

-Y=4Y+15

-5Y=15

Y=-3

 

And knowing X+Y=-7, X must be -4

The combined score is -7, 

 

So x + 4x + 8 = -7

5x = -15, x = -3

 

So Ann's score is -3 and Keegan's is -4
