Hi Jennifer! I used to work on Honda and Cisco (both Fortune 100 companies.) I love this question because it is a very, very common misconception clients make when it comes to social media. Time and time again, they get this backwards.
BEFORE determining which social media platform is right for you, you need to ask:
A) What is your GOAL?
There are many clients who think: "People are on Twitter. We should be on Twitter, too." But if you are not making content this audience finds interesting or relevant, your presence on this platform could backfire and make you appear out of touch. For example, some innovative companies have used Twitter as a customer service "help line." And so before you join a specific platform, ask yourself what you are using it for (goal) and how you plan to connect with specific audience. Which leads us to ...
B) Who is your AUDIENCE?
There are many brands flocking to TikTok right now who will have difficulty connecting with a young audience. Like anything new and trendy, this is soon to get saturated and become a crowded market with less eyeballs and more people tuning out once they grow used to the amount of advertisers.
C) What is your MESSAGE?
Once you decide what your goal is and who you are talking to, what are you trying to say? What value are you offering to potential customers? How are you differentiating yourself from the competition? This will help you decide the best way to reach that audience and which social media platforms might be best for you.
I would be happy to discuss best practices for specific platforms if needed. Til then, hit those stars if this was helpful. Have a great weekend! =)
