A model rocket is launched with an initial velocity of 200 ft/s. The height, h, in feet, of the rocket t seconds after the launch is given by h = −16t² + 200t.

 How many seconds after launch will the rocket be 570 ft above the ground? Round to the nearest hundredth of a second. What is the smaller value and what is the larger value?

Plug in 570 for h

570 = −16t² + 200t Subtract 570 from both sides

0 = −16t² + 200t -570 Used the quadratic equation to solve

t=4.40 seconds

t=8.10 seconds

The smaller value is when it is at 570 feet on the way up, the larger is when it is at 570 feet on the way down.
