Patient with Ability to Explain in Many Ways
To understand "varies directly," "varies inversely," and "varies jointly" one must understand direct and inverse proportions. y = kx is a direct variation, i.e. the proportions are direct. y=k/x is an inverse variation, i.e. 1/x is the inverse. A joint variation could be joint direct or joint inverse.
Your equation, "y varies directly as x and inversely as the square of z" means that y = k(x/z2)
