x+y=-8 and x(y) = -20 I solved for x in the addition problem. x=-8-y I used that difference as the x value in the original multi prob (-8-y)y=-20 that gives me -8y - y^2 = -20 [y^2 means y squared] I divided both sides by -1. 8y + y^2 = 20 that equals y^2 + 8y -20 = 0 Factor it. (y+10)(y-2) = 0 two results are -10 and 2 plug those into one of the original problems to get x = 2 and -6. I don't know enough to tell you why we come up with -6 and 2 that do not work for your problem, but we do come up with the correct answers of x=2 and y=-10 add them=-8 and multiply them=-20
