it takes 70 inches of ribbon to make a bow and wrap the ribbon around a box. The bow takes 32 inches of ribbon. The width of the box is 14 inches.

Jessica,  I assume the question is asking how long the box is?

 

In this case, the ribbon needed to tie the bow is not needed, so you are going to subtract that from the total (70-32=38).  That means the box perimeter (in two dimensions).

l=?

 

Perimeter=2w+2l

38=2(14)+2l

38-28=2l

10=2l

5=l

 

The box is 5 inches long.

 

You can verify this by 2w+2l+bow=total.  2(14)+2(5)+32=70... 28+10+32=70... 70=70
