Think of it this way:

 

7 times a number, plus 12 times a number, is 285.

 

So 19 times a number = 285

 

19n = 285

 

n = 15

 

7 x 15 = 105 adults, 12 x 15 = 180 children

 

105 + 180 = 285 total people.
