two of the top-grossing concert were by a jazz band and a rock band. together the two tours visited 181 cities. The jazz band visited 99 cities more than the rock band. how many cities did each group visit ?

Let R = how many cities the rock band visited

 

The jazz band visited 99 more cities, which is R + 99

 

Together they visited R + (R + 99) cities 

 

So R + (R + 99) = 181

2R = 82

R = 41

 

The rock band visited 41 cities and the jazz band visited 140 cities.  

 

Check:  41 + 140 = 181 total cities visited 

            140 - 41 = 99 more cities visited by jazz band
