I feel accomplished when a student learns.
two numbers x + y = 33
5x+6y = 173 (given that x>y)
33-y = x (solve the simpler equation for one variable x or y... in this case we have solved for x)
5(33-y) + 6y = 173 (plug the solution into second equation and solve for the 2nd variable)
165-5y+6y=173
y=8
x+8=33 --> x=25 (plug the solution into one of the equation and solve for remaining variable)
answer x=25, y=8 (meets condition that x>y)

x represents the larger number
33 - x represents the smaller number
5x + 6(33 - x) = 173
