You need to first subtract 4 from both sides of the equation and see if you can factor the quadratic equation:
4x2 + 8x + 3 = 0
x = (-8 ± √(64 - (4)(4)(3))/(4•2) = -1 ± √(64 - 48)/8 = -1 ± (1/8)(4) = -3/2, -1/2
Checking
(x +3/2)(x+1/2) = x2 + x/2 + 3x/2 + 3/4 = x2 + 2x + 3/4 = 0 --> 4x2 + 8x + 3 = 0 √
Adding 4 to each side gives the original equation
